The therapeutic garden exploits the most complete range of people/plant interactions and experiences possible within its enclosures

Gardens typically have a variety of rooms that are connected with transitional zones throughout. Each room may have a slightly different layout resulting in a variety of ways for its many users to interact with it physically, mentally, and spiritually. These gardens can connect to a person by being physically cultivated by them, or by simply allowing a place for the user to reflect and enjoy the life happening around them.

The Tager Centre garden is an exception to the general rule for therapeutic gardens, which is that a higher level of natural complexity in a garden is associated with greater restorative potential. Theratio of green to hard surface is also important: about 7:3 works best. If there is too little greenery, a garden is not as relaxing or beneficial. Natural complexity also helps to bring wildlife to a garden and maximizes the therapeutic effects of the garden as a microcosm.
